This is a fascinating red with blackberries and other dark berries and dried flowers. Full body, silky and bright fruit and a long, flavorful finish. Fantastic. Drink now.
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Carmenère is scented of crushed blackberries, warm black cherries and red and black plums with an earthy undercurrent of forest floor, tree bark and tilled soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has loads of black fruits and earth layers with a firm, chewy frame and great length.
The 2016 Carmenère is a variety you don't see often in the Valley. It sports a saturated purple color as well as tons of black (and some blue) fruits, charcoal, scorched earth, and a gravelly minerality. It's rich, medium to full-bodied. Has firm tannins, and beautiful balance. I don't have much experience with how this cuvee ages on its own, but there's a classic, structured vibe with this beauty and I suspect it will keep for over a decade.
The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a small cuvée of 200 cases from Northern Napa Valley in the Calistoga AVA. This turned out to be a sleeper selection with a beautiful dark ruby/purple color, sweet blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, supple, well-integrated tannin, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, but power nicely balanced by real finesse and elegance. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 10-15 years. Impressive.
Rich and juicy wine with plum, currant and chocolate character. Medium to full body, juicy fruit and a straight-up finish. Drink now.
Beautiful dark, plummy/blackcurrant/licorice-infused aromatics jump from the glass of the full-bodied 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. I'm not familiar with this estate, but this is certainly an outstanding effort in this vintage. Dense ruby/purple with good, sweet tannin the wine was aged in only about 20% new French oak to emphasize the fruit character of the vintage and that was done flawlessly. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.
Fresh notes of herbs really come through on the nose as well as just picked blackcurrants, oyster shell and crushed stones. Very linear and precise with a tight tannin backbone, acidity with verve and a minerally finish. Drink in 2020.
I was able to taste two wines from Fairwinds Estate. Their 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Valley Floor Vineyard comes from Calistoga and is released under the Valley Floor Vineyard label. This deep purple-colored effort offers a terrific, savory bouquet of plums, violets, blueberries, and sappy herbs. It's ripe, medium to full-bodied, has tons of fruit, and a big finish. It's still young and primordial but shines for its purity (which is the hallmark of the vintage) and freshness.
